Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Legal Bill Review and Litigation Cost Management professional to support the review, auditing, and editing of invoices submitted by outside counsel. The ideal candidate will have strong experience reviewing legal invoices, applying outside counsel billing guidelines, identifying inappropriate or excessive charges, and ensuring legal expenses are accurate, reasonable, and compliant with established standards. This position will primarily support litigation matters, including premises liability, motor vehicle accidents, and general liability claims. The successful candidate will play an important role in identifying billing inefficiencies, managing legal spend, and supporting effective cost-containment initiatives. Candidates with backgrounds as licensed litigation attorneys, experienced claims professionals, or legal operations/cost management specialists are encouraged to apply. Key Responsibilities Review, analyze, audit, and edit invoices submitted by outside counsel. Apply established outside counsel billing guidelines to evaluate invoice compliance. Identify and address excessive, duplicative, administrative, vague, block-billed, or otherwise non-compliant charges. Review attorney and legal staff timekeeper utilization and staffing levels to assess efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Recommend appropriate billing reductions, adjustments, and edits in accordance with established guidelines. Evaluate legal billing trends and identify opportunities for cost savings and improved billing practices. Communicate professionally with outside counsel regarding billing discrepancies, guideline violations, and requested revisions. Maintain detailed documentation of bill review findings, adjustments, and cost-saving recommendations. Collaborate with legal and claims teams to promote consistent billing practices and effective legal spend management. Prepare reports, summaries, and analyses related to legal spend, invoice activity, and billing compliance. Review billing associated with litigation matters, including premises liability, motor vehicle accidents, and general liability claims. Required Qualifications Candidates should meet one of the following backgrounds: Licensed attorney with litigation experience, or Significant professional experience reviewing, auditing, editing, and approving outside counsel invoices. In addition, candidates should have: Demonstrated experience applying litigation billing guidelines and legal spend management practices. Strong understanding of common litigation activities and legal billing practices, particularly within New York litigation matters. Experience reviewing legal bills associated with premises liability, motor vehicle accidents, and general liability. Ability to identify unreasonable, excessive, duplicative, administrative, or non-compensable charges. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to independently manage and review a high volume of legal invoices. Technology Requirements Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Outlook. Experience with legal bill review, e-billing, or matter management systems. Ability to analyze invoice data and maintain detailed billing records. Preferred Qualifications Licensed attorney with litigation experience. Senior claims adjuster or claims professional with significant experience overseeing outside counsel billing. Experience with electronic billing platforms and invoice review systems. Background in legal operations, litigation management, insurance claims, legal spend management, or cost containment. Experience negotiating or communicating billing reductions with outside counsel. | |
